Inhalation product manufacturing combines pharmaceutical formulation with device engineering. The drug must be delivered as aerosol particles in the 1-5 micron range for deep lung deposition. Three main platforms exist: metered-dose inhalers (MDIs, propellant-based), dry powder inhalers (DPIs, breath-actuated), and nebulizer solutions/suspensions (converted to aerosol by the nebulizer device).

Micronization (jet milling), spray drying, and engineered particle technologies control the aerodynamic particle size that determines drug deposition in the lungs. CDMOs with in-house particle engineering capabilities can optimize the formulation-device interaction that ultimately determines clinical efficacy.
